A MES system (Manufacturing Execution System) is an information system that drives the execution of manufacturing operations that occur in the industry. It allows monitoring and tracing the production process of manufactured goods in a factory plant.

The main objective of a MES system is to achieve and maintain that manufacturing operations are executed effectively to optimize production. All this in a highly competitive manufacturing environment that is exposed to constant changes. In order to ensure that the objective pursued is achieved, MES tracks and compiles all necessary and real-time data on a complete production life cycle.

But of course, today it is a chimera to think of two equal manufacturing plants. To begin with, two different industries also have different needs and the kind of operations that are carried out in the factories of each of them can vary as from night to day. Thus, for example, it is not the same to manufacture products individually to do it by means of lots. Due to these differences, it is not possible to have a standardized MES that satisfies all these needs equally. However, the truth is that in spite of everything, all the MES do have a series of characteristics in common that makes it possible to perceive them as a recognizable system despite the differences.

On the one hand, all the MES are usually located on the same level, between the production plant and the corporate systems of the ERP type. It also shares the production time frame (shifts, hours …). And in addition, all the MES systems have some of the main existing modules for the system.

The following are the most important modules that the MES of a manufacturing company can count on.

Production

It allows to manage and monitor in real time the production of the plant, as well as optimize it while analyzing how it is happening. It is possible to know at all times if the previously marked objectives are being fulfilled, as well as to keep a unique registry of incidents that covers all the processes of the plant.

Quality management

One of the pillars on which the improvement of production in the industry is based is quality control, and this module facilitates the definition of critical variables, the control of anomalous trends and the automatic notification of control alarms, factors, all of them, which make it possible for quality managers to make the best decisions based on data and not impressions.

Planning

It is a module that makes the work of the plant manager easier by offering you the data you need to make a more efficient distribution of tasks, to establish priorities in work orders based on loads and delivery times existing. It helps to give an efficiency in the management of the resources that are available.

Expedition

It streamlines and optimizes orders so that operators only have to execute without the need to make decisions in the area of ??dispatch of products intended for dispatch. It allows to know both real-time stocks and the material flow chain. It indicates at all times the location of the product and the materials that may be required.

Documentation management

It puts at the disposal of the operator in any situation the documents (instructions, notes, drawings, plans …) of which he needs to carry out his work.
